Frequently Asked Questions
Is the game free?
Yes, WordsPuzzler is entirely free to play and is funded through advertisements. It will remain so as long as this model is economically viable. You can play as many games as you want, in the 6 available languages, without any limit. Creating an account is also free and allows you to save your statistics, participate in the word of the day, create challenges and join multiplayer leagues.
What are the rules of the game?
WordsPuzzler is a type of word game known in many countries and played worldwide. In case you are not familiar with it, the goal is to guess a word in a minimum and limited number of attempts. You can find more explanations on the game rules page.
Is WordsPuzzler a multiplayer game?
Yes, WordsPuzzler is a multiplayer game and was designed to allow players to compare themselves with each other. Either simply by comparing your public statistics available on player stats profiles, or by participating in regular competitions in public leagues, or by creating your own challenges and private leagues to play with your friends or community. You have no more excuses not to compete against your friends and other players from around the world, to finally prove to everyone that you are the best ;) To do so you need a free account so that we can save your statistics and username to identify you and allow you to participate in these multiplayer game modes.
Does the game take accents into account?
Yes, the game takes accents and other special characters specific to each language into account. If you wish, you can enable a "no accents" game mode on the game selection screen that ignores accents and special characters, but you will earn less XP on your games. Additionally, accents and special characters are always taken into account for the word of the day as well as in public leagues, except for English which does not have any. Finally, the keyboards offered are adapted to each language: AZERTY for French, QWERTY for English and derived versions for Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, and QWERTZ for German.
What are the different game modes?
- Timer mode: a configurable countdown adds time pressure. You can adjust it to 3, 5, 8, 10 or 15 minutes, which will apply an experience bonus to the game.
- Dictionary mode: only real dictionary words are accepted as attempts, and a 350% experience bonus is awarded for each word found, to reward the difficulty.
- Hint mode: additional visual aids for beginners, from 1 to 3 letters revealed from the start, but penalized with a 35% experience penalty.
- No accents mode: accents and special characters are not taken into account, and a 25% experience penalty is applied.
- Play in another language: you can play in one of the 6 available languages. Playing in a language other than your native language will earn you 80% more experience.
- You can combine all these settings to create the game that suits you. And so play a game with hints, no accents, timed and in dictionary mode, which will double your XP compared to a "normal" game accessible initially without changing any game mode.
What is the word of the day?
The word of the day is a unique word per language, identical for all players of the same language each day. It resets at midnight (UTC) and earns you a daily XP bonus, as well as an additional weekly bonus if you complete 5, 6, or 7 words out of 7. Each weekly streak resets on Monday. To be accessible and fun for as many people as possible, the word of the day is not played in dictionary mode, so you can try any characters. To counterbalance this choice, a 5-minute countdown is applied to add some pressure. Finally, accents and special characters are taken into account, except for English which does not have any.
How do challenges work?
You can create a challenge by choosing a language, a word length, a number of attempts and the game modes. A unique link is generated that you can share with anyone, via text, email, social media, etc. Each participant plays under the same conditions and an automatic ranking separates players based on the number of attempts and time spent. This game mode is perfect for introducing the game to your friends and challenging them while having fun! Your friends do not need an account to participate in a challenge.
How do multiplayer leagues work?
Leagues are regular competitions, daily or weekly, where you compete against other players on a series of words. Each player plays on their own on the same words as other players, with the same rules. A ranking separates players based on the number of words completed, the total number of attempts and the total time spent. An XP bonus is awarded to the best players.
How does the XP and leveling system work?
Each game won earns you experience points (XP) calculated based on actual difficulty: word length, number of attempts, activated modes, native or foreign language, timer... The harder the game, the more XP you earn, and you double your XP after 10 consecutive wins. An estimation of the experience for each game is displayed on the "PLAY" button on the game selection page when you are logged in.
The more XP you accumulate, the higher your level. To understand the details of the calculation and multipliers, visit the XP system details page.
How does the skill score work?
The skill score is a rolling indicator calculated over your last 200 games. 200 games are required for it to be displayed on your statistics page as well as in the ranking.
To learn more about how it works, visit the skill system details page.
Can I create my own multiplayer league?
Yes, you can create your own private multiplayer league. Once created according to your criteria (language, word length, game modes, number of words, frequency...), a unique link is generated that you can share with the players you wish to invite. Each player participating in the league plays on their own on the same words as other players, with the same rules, and on the same principle as public leagues. A ranking separates players based on the number of words completed, the total number of attempts and the total time spent. An XP bonus is awarded to the best players.
What languages can I play in?
WordsPuzzler is available in 6 languages: French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Italian. Each language has its own dictionary and its own adapted keyboard (AZERTY, QWERTY, QWERTZ). Accents and special characters for each language are natively supported.
Can I change the grid tile colors?
Yes, you can change the color theme of your game in the settings menu during a game. The chosen colors will be harmonized on the virtual keyboard.
Can I change the dark theme?
You can choose between a dark theme and a light theme by clicking on the dedicated icon in the top right corner of your screen. Think of it as an indoor/outdoor mode rather than just a visual style.
Can I play without creating an account?
Yes, you can play freely without signing up: choose your language, configure your game and play as much as you want. However, without an account, your statistics are not saved and you do not have access to the word of the day, challenges, multiplayer leagues or the progression system (XP, levels, skill). Creating an account is free and takes only a few seconds.
How do I delete my account and data?
You can delete your account very easily from your profile page, by clicking on the account deletion button. This action is irreversible: all your personal data (email address, username, statistics, game history) will be permanently erased.
Is WordsPuzzler available as a mobile app?
WordsPuzzler is a progressive web app (PWA): you can install it directly from your mobile browser using the "Add to Home Screen" option. You will then get an icon on your phone and an experience similar to a native app, without going through a store. An Android app is also currently under development.
How are the game words chosen?
The words are mainly sourced from the recognized Wiktionary dictionary to ensure common and playable words. Vulgar, offensive or overly obscure words are excluded. Each language has its own adapted dictionary compiled from various sources. The complete sources and their licenses are detailed in our legal notices. However, if you believe that a word should not be in the game, a highlighted link on the results page allows you to report it in order to trigger a manual investigation by the administrator.
What is the win streak?
The win streak corresponds to the number of consecutive games won without a loss. The multiplier increases progressively up to 10 consecutive wins to double your experience points. A loss or an abandonment resets the streak to zero. Your best streak is recorded in your statistics and appears in the ranking.
Does the game work offline?
Yes, you can play WordsPuzzler offline, whether on mobile or on a computer. However, you will access a reduced version with few available words and without dictionary mode. Additionally, no statistics will be recorded to prevent possible and likely cheating of all kinds.
How does the ranking work?
The ranking is accessible from the home page and offers three tabs:
- Skill: ranks players by their skill score, calculated over the last 200 games (a minimum of 200 games is therefore required to appear).
- Experience (XP): ranks players by their total accumulated XP.
- Best streak: ranks players by their longest streak of consecutive wins.
You can filter the rankings by language and by period.
